Labor Day!
Just in case you wanted to know how it started. Beginning in the late 19th century as the trade union and labor movements grew, the unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state to make it an official l public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day. Monday was chosen to give workers a three day weekend.
Mother’s Day
Just in case you wanted to know how this all started. Mother’s Day in the United States was first celebrated in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. Ann Jarvis cared for wounded Confederate and Union soldiers during the American Civil Way. She also created “Mothers’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she had started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers.
In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday. However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis by 1911 most states observed the holiday. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday.
Festival of Wesak
Wesak is widely celebrated throughout the East as the Festival of the Buddha. It is considered the high point of the spiritual year when forces of enlightenment flow from the higher worlds into the mind of humanity.
While Buddhists celebrate Wesak as the time that marks the birth, death and enlightenment of the Buddha, ageless wisdom students regard it as a living event. At the exact moment of the Taurus full moon, the Buddha is said to return momentarily to earth, appearing to those gathered in a secluded valley in the Himalayas. The Christ stands before the Buddha and receives the Buddha’s blessings for the coming spiritual year on behalf of humanity sending it out to all human beings.
The Wesak full moon will be on April 23, 2024 at 4;49 pm PST. An easy way to remember this is that Wesak is first full moon following Easter Sunday.
Peace Mantra
A few years ago during a group meditation I channeled the following Peace Mantra. As always during this time of year our hearts and minds turn to Peace on Earth so I thought I would share it with you.
I call upon the Angelic Host led by Archangel Michael to blaze through this county bringing freedom and peace to this land.
I hope you will adopt this mantra and use it often.
Good vs Evil or Light vs Dark
The choice is yours. I was reading a book the other day (no surprise there) and ran across an interesting paragraph something for us to ponder. The Light and Dark were talking and Light said to the Dark, fear, pain and grief give you power. Dark replies, dark will always smother the light. I choose its strength and while those who strive to preserve the Light are distracted in battle and polities, in diplomacy and rules of combat. I use the Dark.
I wonder how many of us are distracted. Just something to think about.
Summer Time
I embrace the liveliness of Summer. A time when many things are in great abundance, light. time, harvest, friends, picnics, balmy evenings. There is no scarcity, there is no darkness, there is just light and life.
It is a time to be extroverted and to simply enjoy everything as it is. Collecting the fruit from the vine, both figuratively and literally. A time when there is a greater sense of activity yet potentially even a greater sense of ease. Warm days and shade trees are just so inviting are they not?
Enjoy your summer with friends, family and and all life has to offer The above article was written by our guest writer Darren Campbell.
