The Real Nicholas Flamel

For all you Harry Potter fans Nicholas Flamel was a real person.  He was the most famous alchemist of his time.  He was born in 1330 in Paris and earned his living as a bookseller and scrivener, writing letters and copying books for clients.  One day he bought a very special book:  the Book of Abraham.  It, too, really existed, and Nicholas left  a very detailed description of the copper-bound book which was written on what looked like bark.

After purchasing the book, accompanied by his wife Perenelle, he spent more than twenty years traveling all over Europe. No one knows what happened on that journey but what is known is that when he returned, he was extraordinarily wealthy.  Nicholas and Perenelle  lived a quiet life and gave a vast sums of  money to charity, and founded hospitals, churches and orphanages.

The records show that Perenelle died first, and not long after in 1418, the death of Nicholas was recorded.  His home was purchased and the buyers tore it apart looking for his great wealth and the Book of Abraham.  Nothing was ever found.

Later, in the dead of night, the tomb of Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel was broken into and it was discovered that the tomb was empty.  Had they been buried in secret graves, or had they never died?  Did they in fact discover the secret of the “Sorcerer’s Stone”  In  the following years  there were sightings of the Flamels across Europe.

Today, you can visit his home in Paris as the people were so grateful for the vast fortunes that the Flamel’s gave away that his house was preserved and they even named streets after him and his wife.

So now you know about the real Nicholas Flamel.  I hope you enjoyed reading about him as much as I did.
